So, um, Mike Sussman is amazing and posted a behind-the-scenes video that every Legend of the Seeker fan knew had to exist. It's awkward and dorky but MY FEELS. Never done with this pairing. Never.

Anyways, I'm hosting a mini-ficathon based on the video that you can find here. I'M SO EXCITED AND INSPIRED YOU GUYS.

So if anyone in Western Washington is looking for roommates, send me a message. synergyfox and I have two extra rooms to rent out, since various other plans fell apart. $430 to rent a room (includes utilities and internet) or $325 if we can get two roommates. Message me for details if you're interested. (We live in Federal Way btw.)

Currently working on my novel, and so far it's been "drop you into the universe and you can figure things out as you go along" in terms of explaining culture, rules, relationships, etc. But it has me thinking about exposition and whether it's/how much is necessary. So. Poll for readers of original fiction (specifically sci-fi/fantasy)!

Poll #1855034 Exposition?
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 29

If you're reading an original novel set in an original universe/culture, how long can you read before you need explanations/exposition on how things work?

View Answers
Start explaining things in the first chapter. I need to know how things work before I can focus on a story.
3 (5.9%)
I can go a few chapters before I need to know at least the basic rules of the universe, but I don't mind some mystery.
9 (17.6%)
As long as the story and characters are interesting, I'm not going to be caring about backstory and explanations.
5 (9.8%)
I don't like exposition at all unless it makes sense for characters to be talking/thinking about it. But if it's in character and it flows, it doesn't really matter when I get it.
5 (9.8%)
Have as little exposition as possible. I like to see authors show-not-tell 99% of the time.
2 (3.9%)
I love exposition, as long as it doesn't go on for pages! Occasional explanations, as long as they aren't jarring to the tone of the prose, are little nuggets of awesome geekery.
11 (21.6%)
It really depends on the quality of the prose, the kind of universe, and what kind of POV you're using. I can't choose.
13 (25.5%)
Other. I'll explain in the comments.

*Currently taking a break from all fandom. It was causing PTSD problems and...yeah, fandom isn't worth that.

*Me and my partner set a marriage date for May 11th of next year, and we're moving into a bigger apartment in a couple weeks.

*Am reading both 50 Shades of Grey and The Eye of the World and am, surprisingly, enjoying both. Also read the Dunk and Egg novellas and was impressed.

*Working on an original novel and feeling incredibly psyched about all my original projects.

*Am now the mum of two rambunctious kittens named Richard and Darken.

*Still, slowly, working on archiving all my fic consistently in multiple places (I absolutely hate that you can't backdate fic on FF.net BTW)

Title: A Seed Planted in Snow
Fandom: A Song of Ice and Fire
Rating: PG-15
Length: 48,000+ words
Genre: series finale, character study
Characters: Sansa, Dany, Tyrion, Jorah, Irri, Margaery, Lyanna Mormont, Melisandre, Myrcella, Tommen, Shireen, Arya (and many others)
Pairings: Sansa/Tyrion, Dany/Jorah, Dany/Irri (and various minor pairings throughout)
Summary: Sansa comes to life again after years as Alayne Stone. Winter has come and the world is changed, but it's not done changing. (A futurefic/wrapping-up-loose-ends story that will be AU as soon as the next book comes out.)
Author's Notes: This is a possible endgame for the ASOIAF series set three years post-ADWD and continuing for another decade. It's eleven chapters, book-based and told entirely from female POVs as a creative exercise. There's ghosts, direwolves, zombies, dragons, magic, unconventional relationships, winter, summer...but mostly it's about characters and the families they create. I wrote it for my dear GF presocratic.

Read it on AO3

1. I posted both a meta on minority representation in television, as well as one on GoT fandom and how they treat Joffrey.

2. synergyfox is showing me the show Rome for the first time, and I'm quite enjoying it. Some of it is...problematic. And there's a couple characters I can't stand (also the opening credits are WTF). But altogether I'm liking it, though the other show we've started is The Tudors and so far I prefer that one.

3. My brain seems almost incapable of writing fic that doesn't come to me on a whim. It's very frustrating, considering how many planned fics I have in various states of WIPs.

4. For those who weren't aware, my fiance synergyfox and I are both polyamorous, and as it turns out we just proposed to a longtime crush of ours...and she accepted. So we're all three going to live together as soon as we can afford it. (I swear, my love life is more successful than any fictional character's that I've written about...it's crazy)

5. Still working on uploading all my fic to AO3...

For those who aren't following me on Tumblr, I apologize for my silence here. As I've probably said many times before, my issues with anxiety are compounded the deeper I am in fandom, and LJ fandom (being more organized and lengthy) is harder than other areas. So I haven't read my flist in...at least two months. I've written some fic, but I haven't read any, I apologize.

Instead of all that, I've spent a lot of time gaming and engaging in low-key discussions (er, flailing, both RL and Tumblr) and it's been a good kind of different. Fandom sometimes is literally bad for my mental health and I need to step back. :-/ However, I never can leave completely. Mostly because my dear fiance is in it too, and since we live together now, every day involves some fannish discussion. Or, like last week, going to a convention together. Or like yesterday, her six-month anniversary present arrived: a replica of Ned Stark's greatsword Ice. That's our favorite shared fandom right now, ASOIAF/Game of Thrones. We're actually watching the new season live and spoiler free—and that's a lot of fun.

Apart from fandom, we've been reaching out into the polyamorous and sex-positive/BDSM communities around where we live, and been reminded once again that the Pacific Northwest is awesome. Of course, explaining all our alternate lifestyle choices to our families...awkward as hell. Oh well, that's what the closet is for. I've also been doing a lot more research for my original novels, since those muses have been overwhelming my fanfic ones recently. Beyond that...housework, cooking, work, and catching up on TV shows and movies that I missed when they first came out. Life is busy, even without daily LJ fandom.

I was pondering the notion of dreams in fiction the other day—the non-prophetic ones. Authors often use them to reveal characters' secret desires, to trick the reader into thinking something incredible actually happened, or to just create a sense of chaos. The last is by far the more realistic scenario, as dreams in real-life are mostly haphazard and confusing. Even nightmares...and this is where my mind went to, as I thought about fictional dreams.

In my life, I've gone through a few highly traumatic situations. Dealing with that trauma while awake is difficult enough, but I've also had nightmares. These memories were nightmarish enough when they happened—therefore my mind thinks that I should relive them, but ramped up to an exponentially worse level. Way to go, mind! Er...or not. I'm no fan of these nightmares. They stick with me. Not only do they bring back traumatic memories (and even memories can bring adrenaline/panic) but they often also muddle the original memory. Going through the nightmare's version of events sometimes colors the original memory, adding on an extra layer of fear.

So of course, as an author who's addicted to writing characters who go through traumatic events, I'm interested in fiction that uses nightmares to purposeful effect. After all, most of my favorite fictional characters have gone through far worse events than I have (body taken over by a parasite, tortured as a prisoner of war, watching a parent killed before your eyes, half eaten alive by rats, etc)—how horrific must their nightmares be? This is a place for authors to character build, and to develop characters' relationships.

How do these traumatized characters deal with potential nightmares? Are they haunted for days, or do they shake it off quickly? Do they pretend like it doesn't bother them, or do they need to vent/beg comfort from a trusted friend? Do they end up with insomnia? How do the people around them help (or hinder, for that matter) their process of dealing with trauma, and nightmares that may go with it?

Whether original fic or fanfic, I am interested in seeing scenes based around this subject. Hurt/Comfort and Angst are the obvious genres, but you could also get into Relationship Development of the gen or shippy variety. I think I may write a few oneshots myself...

1. Round 2 of the Legend of the Seeker pornbattle just finished, and the masterlist of fics (sixty-three in all!) can be found here. As per usual, femslash fans dominate the fandom, but there's some good het in there too (I'm the only one who wrote slash apparently...)

2. While I've been watching only very little new TV lately, I am super-excited for Game of Thrones to come back. I've been RPing in this universe a lot recently, and fallen even more in love than before with most of the characters.

3. I had my depression/anxiety under control until the start of this winter, but SAD is making it so that my meds aren't helping enough. I've been apathetic, randomly weepy, anxious, and irrationally angry over the smallest of things. Apologies for anyone who's had to deal with my behavior... I need to make a doctor's appointment about upping my medication's dosage.

4. The previous point is why I've been mostly absent from fandom, but the other factor is that being not-single takes up a lot of time. A lot of wonderful time... I could gush for days about my girl, and how even grocery shopping with her is better than anything in the world. But I'll spare you that fluff.

5. I've been converting said girlfriend to Fringe over the last few months and gah this show! I'm a little iffy on Season 4 so far, but we'll see how it goes—regardless, the earlier seasons have incredible rewatchability. Olivia! Nina! Charlie! Astrid! (Have also converted one friend to Battlestar Galactica and two more to Legend of the Seeker)

6. I mainlined the first three seasons of Big Love during the past month, but though I was hooked early on I think I'm already falling out of love. This show is so surreal sometimes, so weird. I do ship Nicki/Margene and Ana/Margene like burning. Shallow stuff out of the way, I love the exploration of how religious patriarchy interferes with true polyamory—it's not a happy show, and I have to be in the right mood to watch it. Polyamory, whether sexual or platonic, is something that's sadly absent from both media and much of fandom.

7. All the censorship acts in the news recently have been gutwrenchingly depressing to me. Enough said.

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.
